Type 4 Crankshaft End Float Shim

These genuine Volkswagen crankshaft end float shims are used to accurately set the crankshaft end float on all Type 4 air-cooled engines in 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc form, as well as Type 25 (T3) Waterboxer engines in 1900cc and 2100cc capacities.

Crankshaft end float is the amount of fore-and-aft movement of the crankshaft within the engine case. Correct end float is critical to engine longevity, oil pressure stability, and smooth clutch operation. Excessive end float can cause thrust bearing wear, oil leaks, and clutch problems, while insufficient end float can lead to binding and rapid engine damage.

These shims are fitted between the crankshaft and the flywheel, allowing precise adjustment of the end float during engine assembly. Manufactured from high-quality stainless steel and produced to tight tolerances, they ensure consistent thickness and long service life. Each shim has its thickness etched directly onto the surface, making identification quick and accurate during engine build-up.

To achieve the correct end float, three shims are always required per engine, selected from the available thicknesses to obtain the correct combined measurement. These shims are sold individually, allowing you to select the exact sizes needed for your build.
