Type 4 Crankshaft Main Oil Seal - Pulley End (Small)

This front crankshaft oil seal is the small seal fitted at the pulley end of Volkswagen Type 4 engines in 1700cc, 1800cc, and 2000cc capacities. It is used on Baywindow Buses with air-cooled Type 4 engines and on early Type 25 (T3) Buses fitted with the air-cooled 2000cc CU engine. The seal is also compatible with Porsche 914 Type 4 engines.

The crankshaft pulley oil seal is responsible for preventing engine oil from escaping where the crankshaft exits the crankcase at the front (pulley) end of the engine. It also keeps dirt and debris from entering the engine, protecting internal components. Over time, heat, age, and crankshaft rotation cause the seal to harden or wear, leading to oil leaks that can contaminate belts, pulleys, and surrounding engine components.

Manufactured to precise dimensions, this seal ensures a tight and reliable fit within the crankcase while maintaining consistent contact with the crankshaft pulley surface. Correct installation is essential to prevent leaks; it is recommended to lightly lubricate the sealing lip before fitting and to inspect the pulley for wear or scoring that could compromise sealing.

Only one seal is required per engine, making it an essential service item during engine rebuilds, pulley replacement, or when addressing oil leaks at the front of the engine.
