A starter motor converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical force to rotate the engine during start-up. When you turn the key, the starter’s solenoid pushes the pinion gear forward to engage with the flywheel (manual) or flexplate (automatic). The motor then spins the engine until it fires. Once the engine starts, the pinion retracts to prevent overspeed damage and wear. The 9-tooth pinion ensures correct mesh with the ring gear for smooth engagement and reduced chance of grinding or kick-back.
