T4,G1,G3,G4 Automatic Starter Motor - 2.0 (AAC)

This 12V, 1.1 kW starter motor with a 9-tooth pinion is a versatile replacement unit used across a wide range of Volkswagen models and engine codes. Designed for both manual and automatic gearbox applications (model dependent), it provides reliable cranking power for everyday road cars as well as performance variants such as 16V and certain automatic fitments. Always check the fitting notes and engine code list below to confirm the correct application for your vehicle.

A starter motor converts electrical energy from the battery into mechanical force to rotate the engine during start-up. When you turn the key, the starter’s solenoid pushes the pinion gear forward to engage with the flywheel (manual) or flexplate (automatic). The motor then spins the engine until it fires. Once the engine starts, the pinion retracts to prevent overspeed damage and wear. The 9-tooth pinion ensures correct mesh with the ring gear for smooth engagement and reduced chance of grinding or kick-back.

At 1.1 kW, this unit delivers the right balance of torque and current draw for many VW petrol engines, helping reduce strain on the battery and wiring when compared with tired or failing originals. If your current starter is suffering from slow cranking, intermittent clicking, hot-start issues, or occasional non-engagement, replacement is a smart reliability upgrade—especially on older vehicles where internal brushes, bushings, and solenoid contacts are typically worn.

Recommended fitting checks and related parts:
To get the best results from a new starter motor, it’s worth inspecting the battery condition, battery terminals, starter power cable, and the main engine-to-chassis earth strap (poor earthing causes slow cranking and solenoid clicking). On some installations you may also require new starter mounting bolts, and if the vehicle is an automatic, confirming compatibility with the correct flexplate/ring gear is essential. If your old starter has been leaking oil onto it, address any engine/gearbox oil leaks to maximise starter life.
