SSP Steering Wheel Installation

In this video guide Rob and his son will show you just how easy it is to change your steering wheel… in less than 5 minutes.

Hi guys, Rob here from Cool Air VW. Welcome to my video guide on how to fit an aftermarket SSP steering wheel onto your V-Dub.

We are installing it onto a late Bay in the video but all VW models are practically the same.

The first stage is to assemble the new steering wheel. The steering wheel will require mounting onto a steering wheel boss which is manufactured for different models.

Make sure that the SSP logo on the boss lines up with the bottom of the steering wheel.

Place the billet spacer ring over the steering wheel and hand tighten all of the allen key head mounting screws.

Now take your allen key and tighten each bolt up in turn. In order to make sure the wheel is centered on the boss it is good practice to tighten the bolts on opposite corners working your way around.

Next you need to remove your old steering wheel off of the car before undoing the nut, make sure that the wheels are straight and pointing forwards.

Now using a socket and ratchet remove the steering wheel nut be careful not to damage the horn wire coming through the centre of the steering wheel. Once the nut is removed pull the steering wheel up off the steering column, you may require the use of a puller for stubborn steering wheels that have not been removed before.

The next stage is to remove the indicator canceling ring from the bottom of your original steering wheel and attach it to the bottom of your new steering wheel.

With your new steering wheel now fully assembled slide it over the steering column and tighten up the steering wheel nut.

Now remove the small screw inside the boss and connect the horn earth wire to the boss.

Slide the electrical spade terminal onto the wire coming out of the centre of the steering column.

Now making sure you do not trap any wires push the home button into place.

And that’s it, simple.

… Beep!
