Type 1 Front Axle with Link Pins (up to 1965)
The supporting part of the front axle is the axle beam which consists of two rigidly joined tubes and is fixed to the frame head by four screws. Inside the axle tubes are the torsion bars which are made up of eight spring leaves each and anchored in the middle to prevent them from turning and moving laterally. The torsion arms which are fitted on the ends of the torsion bars are each mounted in the tubes in a plastic bush and needle bearing. The torsion arm links which carry the steering knuckles are attached to the torsion arms by adjustable pins and are free to pivot. A thrust bearing is fitted at the top between steering knuckle and torsion arm link to taker the axial thrust.
The front axle is fitted with telescopic, double-acting, hydraulic shock absorbers. The shock absorbers are designed exactly to suit the suspension characteristics of the vehicle. It is, therefore, essential to always use the correct shock absorbers when replacing.
A torsion bar stabilizer is installed between the lower torsion bars.
